Tonino arrived on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain in 2022 and has spent the years since accumulating the kind of critical density that most Italian restaurants spend a decade chasing — Boston Magazine, Eater, Condé Nast, The Infatuation, the New York Times. Chef Luke Fetbroth, who came up through Sarma and Giulia, has built something with a precise point of view: not the red-sauce canon, not the white-tablecloth formality, but the Roman neighbourhood trattoria at its most considered — enoteca energy, aperitivo-bar pacing, a room that borrows from the smaller quartieri ringing the city centre rather than its grand dining rooms. Twenty-eight seats is not a hedge; it's a position. The tables are close, the candles are on, the red leather cushions on wood-panelled benches signal a certain European familiarity that JP — walkable, unhurried, genuinely local — earns the right to carry. The menu's signature moves are built around handmade pasta and uncommon combinations executed with confidence. The Taleggio Cappelletti with aged balsamic is the dish that gets cited most: filled pasta, the warm savouriness of taleggio pulled into balance by the acidity and sweetness of the balsamic.
