Researched recommendation

On Clarence Street in the thick of the ByWard Market, Masakali makes a case for Indian food that isn't shy about its bar program. This is a room that works for a Tuesday two-top and a Saturday twelve-top with equal ease — spacious, cozy without being precious, and open eleven to ten every day, which matters when the group text can't agree on a time. Order the Hyderabadi biryani; regulars swear it's among the city's best, and the layered rice earns it. The butter chicken is the safe crowd-pleaser, rich and generous, and you'll want garlic naan to chase it. But don't sleep on the smaller plates: crispy corn that people genuinely rave about, and Paneer 65, those deep-fried cubes slicked in tangy chili-garlic sauce that disappear fastest at any table. Cocktails lean playful — a Singapore sling, an orange blossom — and a mango lassi keeps the heat honest. At roughly $15–25 a head, it's fair Market pricing for food this satisfying. Bring people who like to share.

Govinda's has been operating in Ottawa, which means it predates the city's entire modern plant-based dining scene by several decades.
