Researched recommendation

Let's get one thing straight: Noodle House 79 is not doing "global" in the way that word usually signals trouble — a laminated menu sprawling across three continents, committed to nothing. What they're actually doing is Vietnamese, seriously, out of a strip mall on Merivale Road in Nepean, and the hundred-plus options on the menu aren't a lack of focus — they're the product of a family that genuinely knows noodle culture. The owner's brother runs Kanata Noodle House, and that lineage matters. This is a place that opened in January 2022, mid-pandemic, betting that a neighbourhood would show up for a real bowl of soup. That bet paid off. The Bún Bò Huế is the one to lead with. Where pho is subtle and meditative, this central Vietnamese spiced beef-and-pork vermicelli is louder — more lemongrass, more heat, a broth that announces itself. By some accounts it's among the best in Ottawa, which is a meaningful claim in a city that has learned to take Vietnamese soup seriously. Then there's the Crab Ball Soup, a special that earns its scarcity. Deep-fried tofu, congealed pig's blood, lime-leaf chicken meatballs, crab meatballs — all of it floating in a broth built from shrimp shells and chicken stock that smells like it's been tended. You will not find this particular bowl on many Ottawa menus, full stop. The Crispy Noodles with Beef rounds out the case: textbook execution, clean fry on the noodles, an oyster-sauce-forward gravy that doesn't drown what it's coating. The insider move is to go on a Monday or Wednesday if you or anyone at your table qualifies for the 15% senior discount — it's a genuinely generous policy that signals what kind of operation this is. Go early if you want the specials; items like the Crab Ball Soup move. Skip the pressure to order wide on a first visit and instead build the meal around the Bún Bò Huế and one soup special — that's the version of this restaurant that converts people into regulars.
