Chef-owner Joseph Fontelera, formerly of Arami and a Chopped alum, has built a Bib Gourmand room and a James Beard semifinalist nod from a diminutive, low-lit Ravenswood space dressed in blonde wood and framed family photos. The food honors his Philippines-born grandmother without trading on nostalgia. The sizzling sisig arrives on a hot plate, an egg folded tableside into crispy pork hash and a guarded sauce — theatre that earns its keep. The steelhead trout, flaky against a tart, faintly bitter tamarind-and-burnt-tomato broth, is the quieter triumph. Order the garlic rice despite the $6 upcharge; it's the rare side worth a line item. The menu is compact and rotates, so don't anchor to any single dish. At $6 to $28, Boonie's asks little and returns a great deal. For a weeknight dinner with intent, the cheque is more than justified.
