Moonflower opened on Milwaukee Avenue in Portage Park — not exactly a neighborhood that gets the press its food and bar scene deserves — and it arrived with more credibility than most new bars can claim. The three founders crossed paths at Headquarters Beercade in River North and went on to log time at Hogsalt Hospitality, 16" on Center, and Celeste before claiming the former Hops & Barley space at 4359 N Milwaukee and rebuilding it into something distinctly their own. The room is lush: they partnered with Sunnyside Plants and Plant Shop Chicago to thread real greenery through the space, which reads less as décor trend and more as a genuine point of view. This is a bar built by people who know what a good bar feels like — and the food menu suggests they weren't willing to let the kitchen be an afterthought. The menu is short, specific, and confident in a way that bar food rarely manages. The New Moon Burger leads with chili oil heat, which tells you something about the kitchen's register — this isn't a shy crowd-pleaser. The Brussels Sprouts appetizer gets a harissa feta glaze and cashew crunch, a combination that earns its place on a bar menu by actually being interesting rather than merely present.
