Tortello sets its terms plainly: handmade pasta worked in the front windows, a counter to order at, a Vespa overhead, and a long, narrow room floored in black-and-white tile. This is not a special-occasion room, and it doesn't pretend to be. It's a chef-driven counter-serve from husband-and-wife Dario Monni and Jill Gray, with Duncan Biddulph — late of Lula Café and The Publican — running a kitchen built on recipes Monni carried from Venice and Sardinia. The Michelin Bib Gourmand it has held is the right honour: good cooking, fair value. The Tagliatelle Tina, named for Nonna Tina, pairs the pasta with a grass-fed beef ragu at $24 and is the room's most-ordered plate for reason. The Tortelli di Burrata ($25), with Pugliese burrata, sage and toasted hazelnuts, justifies its slight premium. Order the focaccia with ricotta and honey alongside. At these prices, with everything made in-house, Tortello earns its reputation without straining for it — a rare, honest equation in a city that often overcharges for less.
