Co Oi Kitchen occupies a particular lane in Ottawa's Glebe that very few restaurants bother with: Northern Vietnamese cooking, Hà Nội-rooted and deliberately restrained, in a tradition most of the city's Vietnamese spots treat as background noise. The name is a signal — cô ơi is the call you'd make at a street market stall to get an auntie's attention — and by all accounts Chef Thao's kitchen operates with exactly that kind of specificity. This is personal, regionally committed cooking rather than a pan-Vietnamese compromise. Sisters Ann and Chi run the front of house with evident purpose, the room is compact, and the open kitchen keeps diners close to the actual work. That intimacy appears to be deliberate, not incidental. The menu centers on a short list of dishes that diners consistently cite as the reasons to return. The Bún Chả Hà Nội is the anchor: grilled pork patties and belly, reportedly pushed hard for smoke and char before being served alongside a tangy, savory dipping broth with vermicelli and fresh greens — a structure closer to the Hà Nội street original than most Ottawa interpretations attempt. The Hà Nội Wonton Noodle is what regulars describe as the sleeper order, built around housemade char siu, gai lan, and chives, with wontons that are consistently praised for their texture and filling. The Nem — spring rolls — are known for a wrapper with genuine structural crispness and a filling of meat, shrimp, and vegetables that reportedly needs no tableside adjustment. The room is small and reservations are treated as mandatory, not courtesy. At this price point, the cooking represents unusual value by Ottawa standards — book earlier in the week if you want the kitchen at full attention, and let the front-of-house guide you on what's running well. The Bún Chả Hà Nội is where to start; build the rest of the table from there.

Vanier doesn't need Starbite Resto to be precious about anything, and from what research consistently turns up, it isn't.
