DUKES Ottawa occupies the converted house on Adeline Street that formerly held Alice, and the transition has produced something the neighbourhood apparently needed: a brunch room with serious culinary DNA that has no interest in performing it. The founder reportedly staged at Noma and Vin Papillon before deciding to cook rather than theorize about it, and that background shows in the deliberateness of a menu that is short by design. The space itself has a low-key 70s diner warmth to it — a house-scale room with no aspirations toward spectacle — which aligns with what the kitchen seems to be going for: food that is genuinely considered without being precious about the occasion. The menu centers on a tight roster of dishes that diners consistently point to as the reason to come back. The Steak and Eggs is the anchor — steak sliced and served over chimichurri, with mushrooms, tomatoes, and fried onions completing the plate.
