Researched recommendation

Phuket Royal occupies a particular and underappreciated niche on Somerset Street West: a genuinely multicultural kitchen that does not apologize for its own breadth. Owned by Kung Lim, who grew up in Cambodia, and Chhay Ngo, who trained in French cuisine in France, the restaurant reflects two people who came to food from very different angles. Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese BBQ, and Filipino lechon share menu space, and that range is not confusion — it is biography. The head chef is Thai-born and reportedly committed to traditional technique, which keeps the Southeast Asian preparations anchored rather than letting them drift toward a vague pan-Asian softness. This is a room built for people who actually live in this neighbourhood, who want a full meal at a price point that needs no justification, and who understand that a budget dinner can carry as much intention as a tasting menu. The three dishes that consistently anchor the Thai side of the menu are worth knowing before you arrive. The Tom Kha soup is frequently cited by regulars as the kitchen's clearest argument for itself — coconut-galangal balance is harder to calibrate than it sounds, and accounts suggest this version holds that tension rather than collapsing into either sweetness or sharpness. The Pad Thai is described by diners as a version made by someone who knows what the dish is supposed to be before it was flattened into a Western default. The Green Curry appears often enough in loyal-customer accounts that it reads as a reliable order-anchor for a first visit, particularly for a table sharing across courses. Practically speaking: the dining room is spacious enough that a Tuesday visit won't feel crowded, though Chinatown weekends fill quickly. The kitchen is known to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-friendly needs without requiring a separate negotiation. Come with enough people to order across culinary traditions — the menu's multicultural range pays off most when you move laterally through it rather than staying in a single lane.
