Researched recommendation

Siam Bistro has been on the downtown Ottawa map, which makes it older than most of the Thai restaurants in this city combined. That kind of longevity in a single location, family-run, at price level one, doesn't happen by accident — it happens because the cooking keeps people coming back and the welcome keeps them comfortable. Owner Kathy has built a reputation for a room that operates less like a transaction and more like a standing arrangement with its regulars, the kind of place that fills on weekends with people who've been showing up for years and have no intention of stopping. The menu is where the kitchen makes its case. The Spicy Pork Salad is consistently cited as a signature — reportedly built around real heat with actual composition behind it, not a softened approximation of spice. The Chef's Special Tilapia is known for restraint: delicate, properly seasoned, not buried. The Eggplant and Tofu has a following among regulars who treat it as the order that converts skeptics, praised for the way the components work together. Tom Yum Soup here is described by longtime diners as a benchmark — the version you find yourself comparing others against. The Green Mango Salad with Shrimp rounds out the picture as a dish that has reportedly held its place on the menu for decades because it's consistently well-executed. Practical reality: this room fills on weekends with people who aren't giving up their reservations, so book ahead. At this price point, ordering across several dishes costs you almost nothing, which is exactly how you should approach it — go wide, let the kitchen show you what thirty-five years of doing one thing looks like.

No diner notes for Siam Bistro yet.

Govinda's has been operating in Ottawa, which means it predates the city's entire modern plant-based dining scene by several decades.
