HALINÁ Modern Filipino Kitchen + Bar arrived in Hastings Sunrise in June 2025 carrying real origin story weight: owner CJ Javier and his crew started two years earlier as Bigboys and Chigs, a ghost kitchen in Langley slinging sandwiches and rice bowls, before committing to a brick-and-mortar that could properly represent Filipino-Canadian cooking. The name itself — Halina, meaning an invitation to come — is borrowed from a sense of perseverance, and the logo riffs on the Ibong Adarna, the mythical bird of Filipino folklore. None of that is decorative backstory. It tells you this kitchen has something to prove, and that it comes from actual community rather than trend-chasing. The room backs this up: wood, cement, white furniture, tropical planters, and a large mural by Vancouver artist Mar Cortez. It's unfussy in the way that actually takes effort to pull off. The menu centers on Filipino classics pushed through a modern, Canadian-ingredient lens.
