Strathcona does not apologize for itself, and neither does Petrichor. While most of Vancouver's French-adjacent restaurants are either performing Le Bernardin cosplay or drowning everything in truffle oil to justify a $45 entrée, this place is doing something more interesting: French farmhouse cooking at a price point that makes you genuinely suspicious. The room, by all accounts, carries the neighborhood's character — a little raw, a little lived-in — and the cooking is reportedly built to match that energy without condescending to it. Price level one for this category of cooking is the kind of thing that turns heads, and based on what the menu is centered around, the skepticism appears to dissolve quickly. The Boeuf Bourguignon is the dish Petrichor is consistently associated with — a properly long-braised stew that diners describe as dark and deeply reduced, the kind of bourguignon where the wine has clearly had time to do its work rather than announce itself. The Sole En Papillotte is quieter but reportedly precise; en papillote cookery leaves nowhere to hide, and the kitchen appears to know that.
