Marpole doesn't get a lot of critical attention — it's a residential stretch of South Vancouver where Granville Street is more hardware stores than hotspots — which is exactly why a family-owned Thai restaurant that's been running since 2009 has been able to quietly build one of the more serious reputations for authentic Thai cooking in the city. Talay Thai isn't chasing the Robson Street crowd or dressing itself up for a younger demographic. It serves a neighbourhood that knows it, in a room described as peaceful and unencumbered — the kind of space where you can actually have a conversation and where the point is the food. The menu centres on Thai cooking done without shortcuts. The Kaeng Massaman is the dish that tells you what this kitchen cares about: chicken in a massaman curry with coconut milk, shallots, lychees, potatoes, and peanuts — a dish with Southern Thai and Persian roots that rewards a kitchen willing to build it properly rather than approximate it. The Goong Thawd — tempura fried tiger prawns with house-made plum sauce — shows up as a reliable starter in diner accounts, the plum sauce being the detail that earns repeat mentions.
